CLIENT & PRODUCT: Deposit Return Scheme
UK consumers go through an estimated 14 billion plastic drinks bottles, 9 billion drinks cans and 5 billion glass bottles a year. While it is possible to recycle plastic bottles, statistics by Recycle Now show that only half of plastic bottles are being recycled. This isn’t just a littering issue, it’s a serious environmental issue as we look at the current state and impact of plastic waste in the oceans.
The Government have proposed to introduce a deposit return scheme for drinks containers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The scheme has been planned since 2018 as an initiative to reduce litter and boost recycling to reach their target to collect 77% of single-use plastic bottles placed on the market (by weight) by 2025, and 90% by 2029.

A deposit return scheme works as follows:
Consumers' drinks purchases will be subject to a set deposit payable at time of purchase. This will then be returned to them upon the return of their empty beverage container.
